New Data in Each Column

Hello Everyone,

I'm an amateur at this - actually had someone build my original PHP pages. I've been searching the archive for the past hour and can't seem to find my answer.

My problem is this:

I'm trying to show the three newest articles submitted to my site in an HTML column.

I have a page that displays 10 in a row and that seems fine. But I'm having trouble getting three in a column on a different page. I did get three at one point but they ended up being the same record. Make sense?

I've changed "NumRows" to "NumCols" as a guess. Maybe I did something wrong.

Forgive my rambling. I'm trying to give as much background as possible, given my complete inexperience with PHP. 🙂

It would help if you posted some code. However I had a site where the top 10 news items were posted on the front page and basically what I did was this:

1) Each item in the database had a timestamp

2)
$result = mysql_query($db,"SELECT * FROM newstable ORDER BY date DESC LIMIT 3");

while(list($article,$date) = mysql_select_row($result))
{
//echo article and date here
}

That should give you only the top 3 items

oops.. my mistake (1):

while(list($article,$date) = mysql_select_row($result))

Correction:
while(list($article,$date) = mysql_fetch_row($result))

my mistake (2):

$result = mysql_query($db,"SELECT * FROM newstable ORDER BY date DESC LIMIT 3");

Correction
$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM newstable ORDER BY date DESC LIMIT 3",$db);

I'm still having trouble.

While I can get three different results in a row like so:

example1
example2
example3

I can't seem to get them into a column like

example1 example2 example3

Any help is greatly appreciated. 🙂

Have you tried integrating the code I posted? It seems that that code SHOULD work.
