Directory location and $REQUEST_URI

How can i find in which directory i am through the URL, so that i can do something.

For example any URL that starts with http://www.mysite.com/dir1/index...?....
does something and http://www.mysite.com/dir2/index...?....
does something else.

I tried with $REQUEST_URI and preg_match but i couldn't make it

Sorry. What i meant is to search for
"www.mysite.com/dir1/"
in any URL like
http://www.mysite.com/dir1/index...?....
