How can i create an interactive menu lis

ok this is my problem i want to create two menu lists, the first includes normal variables, but once hit, the second one will be updated with information from a mysql database, showing the different options and then submitting all the values for a search, the problem is how do i make the second form interative, does anyone have an example i can see ?

I suppose this could be done with javascript with your php, but I usually refresh the page and have a second tier of code add the second menu list. ie. the first time the page is accessed a piece of code checks to see if the variable of the first menu is set, if not it doesn't print, if so it populates the list and prints it to the page.
