Comparing integers

I've got a problem in that I need to find out whether a given variable is < or > 3. When I do in the VB manner, I get a parse error (VB manner: if $miles < 3).

Apologies if this message has been handled before, but i was unable to fing any relavant post on the search engine.

Are you sure you're putting the condition in parentheses?

if($miles < 3) {

....
}

I know in vb it works like this:
if miles < 3 then

....

end if

but it's different in PHP
