w/o using a database... saving Int's

Ok, here's the deal... I don't have a Unix system, therefor I cannot use mySQL w/o paying $$ which i don't have. Now, I know how to write strings to text files, but how do you save and load an integer w/o using a database? Please help, this basically runs a good amount of features for my site.

MySQL is free on any platform.

Integers are just strings with numbers instead of letters. You can save them to a textfile just like any string, and read them just like a string (because they are strings)
When PHP reads such a string it will automatically cast it to the correct type for use in mathematical operations.
