I can create and destroy my sessions and verify this by seeing the temp file being created and deleted in my tmp folder. This doesn't stop my browser taking me to the administration page of my site without asking for the user to log on every time the logon page is called. Is this something to do with my browser or is there another cache being used that I cant see?

If your admin page does not ask for a logon even though the session has been deleted, that must mean that your logon does not require a session to be there at all.
Show some code and maybe we can help.
