How to call up windows program via a web

Hi all,

I'm quite sure it cannot be done and it should not be done, but would like to be sure. Here is what I was asked to do and the answer I gave was NO,NO.No...

I'm using PHP 4.06 with apache. SOmeone asked if I can make a link on a page, then , by clicking on that "link" from the browser, a local windows program can be launched, for example, notepad.

It would be horrible if it can be done!

Please tell me I am right.

you can run a program on the server from a webpage by using exec()

you can run a program on the client using vbscript (if they use ie+win), or the target of the link could be
c:\winnt\system32\notepad.exe
