duplicate partials...

I do an import via tab spaced text file.

I already do unique so exact matches are never imported twice. The issue that i would like to fix is partial matches. I want to run something so that stuff like:

anyplace 123 st
anyplace 223 st
anyplace 444 st
anyplace 555 st

I want to be able to delete all but the first one.. be able to tell it to look at the first 8 characters and if they match, delete the duplicate.

realize you have the text file readed to array.
so make:
foreach($lines as $line)
{
$substr=substr($line,0,8);
if (!isset($newarray[$substr]))
{
$newarray[$substr]=$line;
}
}

how would i implement this? would this be in the same php script as the import or a new one?
