Hello,
i am using a apache webserver on linux platform.I want to run a process at the back ground which sees the current date and time and update my pages(news, events) automatically.can i do this by running a demon in the background. if any one can help me in this please give me an explanation about this and how to impliment this.

what exactly do you want it to do?
you can use php/asp/javascript/ect to put date/time on pages...

So what are you wanting the daemon to do exactly?

If you want live date and time -=> use javascript

If you can omit live date and time -=> use a small php script you can adapt to your needs

hello,
I have a database containing the news and events of that site.. i want to update the pages as the time reaches the news time in the database. even if the browser window stands idle i want to reload the window with latest contents. at the same time i dont want to refresh the window periodically. only if any need of updation of news and events (new news) then only i need to reload the page with latest contents.
pls help.

Well, php can manage your database and reloads, its server side and will do a great job.

php can connect to (insert any database name here) very easily.

have php test the date in the database against the current date and only display if its current.

I will not suggest any daemon for that.

But if we use only php to display the latest content, it will remain the same till we refresh/reload the page again. but i want to update it even if the browser stays idle for that a demon must be used to run a back end script...

Who cares if it changes when no-one is viewing it?

You can not force client browsers to reload from the server. With a daemon
