Cutting off extra letters?

OK Here's the situation...
I have a script I made that lists the pictures in a directory on an html file:

a href="picture_of_lisa.jpg>picture_of_lisa.jpg</a

So that everytime I upload a new file, it automatically gets added to the index. The problem is I would like to make it so what's output to the screen in the href statement is just "picture_of_lisa" like:

a href="picture_of_lisa.jpg">picture_of_lisa</a

In otherwords, how do I cut off the last 4 chars of an item? (the .jpg)?

I've always done it by finding the length, call it x and then getting and keeping the first x-4 characters!

Never thought of using -#s!
