formatting output text

i have a file: schedule.txt with formatting like this:

Monday, January 1:
- Event
- Event
- Event
Tuesday, January 2:
- Event
- Event
Wednesday, January 3:
- Event

How can I search through the file line-by-line to determine if the line.. lets say "Monday January 1" matches the current (todays) date displayed on the websites main page.. so then I can ouput the current events for THAT day. Any suggestions?

First thing I would do is format your file differently. I would have it look like this:
date,event,event...
This way all you'd have to do is open the file, read each line using fgets() and put each line in an array using split(). Your array will look like this:
array[0]=date,array[1]=event1,array[2]=event2...
Then all you have to do is find today's date and if today's date matches the first item in you array have it display the events.

yes that is a very good idea.
the only thing is... the data must be entered by a user. like now.. the user enters the information in a textarea box. i wanted to try as hard as i could to keep the current format as it will be entered by the scheduling agent at my school. if you think that we could incorporate this method while having the user who inputs the data be able to easily enter it, without necessarily knowing how many days, or how many events each day.. then yeah man ANY help or code you can offer would be great!
