passing variables in url

meister has helped me out with the following script, which I have stuffed up. Having lost the original ... can someone help me out?

The url (with variable expressed as string) is http://domainname/client_details.php?client=$client_name

(This is not what appears in the url, obviously, ... $client_name is whatever value has been assigned)

This is the script I have ...

<?php
$a = explode ('&',$client);
$i = 0;
while ($i < count($a)) {
$b = split('=', $a[$i]);
$client_name = htmlspecialchars(urldecode($b[1]));
echo "<b>Client Details for $client_name</b><br />\n";
$i++;
}

The output at the moment is no parse errors or anything, but also no value for $client_name.

I can't see why you just don't use $client.

If you have
"http://domainname/client_details.php?client=scarf%20baby"

then when client_details.php runs, $client="scarf baby". urldecoded, unescaped, and all.

And if you have
"http://domainname/client_details.php?client=scarf%20baby&patron=Cate%27spage"

client_details.php runs with
$client="scarf baby"
$patron="Cate's page"

...course, typing urlencoded text by hand is often ill-advised. If my example were correct, $patron would equal "Cate'spage"

Sorry, I have no idea what you mean. In the context of my script, what would you change?

There is only ever one variable passed in this url. It happens when the user clicks on the name of a client, whose data they wish to change. The name is a link on the previous page, which passes the client name to the url, and goes to client_details.php

Now I have to work out why the value is not being picked up.

Yes, I may be a bit thick!🙂 On the other hand, I am battling to understand a language I have never used (I havent done any coding since Pascal in uni 10 years ago) because the situation demands it. I would appreciate any help I can get, so that I dont let my client down.
