Is there a SQL or PHP function that can compare two strings to see if they are "similar"? I'm not sure what criteria would be used, but I'd be interested to see if there is something like this out there.
Quick manual search for 'similar' is a good place to start.

Equally look-up the "LIKE" command in MySQL.
