How to check if an E-mailadres is valid

Hi,

Does anyone know how i can make a php script that does check an e-mailadres if it actualy exists?
I allready tried other e-mailadres checkers but they only check the e-mail adres itself for wrong characters.
I know that i need to do something with the MX record of the e-mailadresses domainname, and then i have to make contact with the mx-server.
But how to i do that?

I think there was a tutorial on this site or on zend that contacted the mail server and queried the username. Try and search zend.com and if I can find it I will email you back.
