Question about CHMOD

for example public_html/dirname1/dirname2/dirname3/files.* :

if i change dir to dirname1, then i run chmod 777 there, do all the succeeding directories in dirname2 and dirname3 are affected by the chmod? if not how can i chmod the dir? as well as how to chmod all the files of dirname1, dirname2 & dirname3 to chmod 666 in a fast manner?

man chmod
at the command line will answer your question,
but for brevity,

cd public_html/dir1
chmod 777 *

will only change all files in dir1 to 777

cd public_html/dir1
chmod -R *

will change all files in dir1 too 777, but additionally change recursively all the directories and their contents within dir1 - ie all the contents of dir2 and dir3 etc etc
