backslash in url path problem

I've installed some freeware where the configuration file says if you're using windows then you'll need to set the path separator as \

I do that but when I run the program it is unable to reference files and I see that it includes \ in the url rather than / and I think this is causing it the error where the file is not found? I've tried setting it to / but that doesn't work either.

I'm running IIS 5.0

I don't know what the program is but it's most likely using a web browser to access a file on your hard drive (not the web) Windows file systems are navigated like follows:
C:\My Documents\career\webpage.htm
and Unix file systems are like:
/usr/local/games/pacman
I'm sure that has something to do with it.
