online formatting HTML (like hotmail)

Hi,

When you look at the Compose section of the new Hotmail system, you will see an option to format your text. This is some dynamic system (probably JScript) which writes the HTML code for you. The user just uses the interface and toolbar to format his/her email painlessly without knowing any HTML at all.

Well, I would like to have something like that myself. I would use it for users to format articles which I would then stash into a MySQL database as a single field. The users do not need to know any HTML (as a matter of fact they don't :-)

If anyone came accross such a script somewhere (that I could use), it would save me a lot of time! Writing something like this will take me weeks at least!!

It's Javascript/DHTML. M$ have a similar version on MSDN, somewhere in the web development section.

I'm currently working on a project that does exactly what your looking to do, unfortunatly I can't distribute the code for it but I will point you in the right directions.

My editor is a an iframe with designmode=on, then all commands (make bold, italic...) are called in an external javascript file using the invaluable execCommand method learn EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know here:

thanks for the tip Matt, I was also looking for a script that lets you format text. The iFrame method only works in Explorer, but Hotmail formatting (I never even checked!) also doesn't work in NS.

TBH, I've never seen a version that does work on NS.
