I have a link to download an mp3 in linux...it goes like this

echo "<a href="/tmp/ben.mp3">link</a>";
I have also tried
echo "<a href="tmp/ben.mp3">link</a>";

What am I doing wrong

You need to add \ to your internal quotes, otherwise all " are interpreted as ending the statement.

Here:

echo "<a href=\"/tmp/ben.mp3\">link</a>";

You need to escape quotes inside of quotes.

echo "<a href=\"/tmp/ben.mp3\">link</a>";
