Getting most recent entry in DB

How can I efficiently retrieve the most recent entry into a DB if I have a timestamp field and an incrementing primary key?

If I resort to selecting all of them and taking just the first one, how would I do that? I know of doing a while loop with an IF condition, but is there an easier way?

LAST_INSERT_ID()
and
mysql_insert_id

Try playing with this (check out the MySQL documentation is this isn't what you need):

SELECT MAX(ColumnName) AS ColumnName FROM TableName;

For example: SELECT MAX(ID) AS ID FROM MyTable;
