database archiving

Hi!
I am surprised to see nobody concerned about database archiving. i suppose mysql is small & reliable db compared to others. so as database grows it slows down the acess,so there should be some means to archive the data, based on some criteria.

can some one pour more thought on this!

Maybe there isn't much concern shown here because this is a PHP coding forum.

If you had a database which needed regular archiving (e.g. a forum like this one), it would be pretty trivial to archive off old records by selecting them from the original table and inserting them into a separate table used for archiving (or a completely separate database if you have that luxury in your hosting package - I don't!), then deleting them from the original table. I tend to put a timestamp field in all my regularly-updated tables to aid in just this kind of data management.
