using php to execute commands

I am tring to use php to execute a simple command line script. When I attempt doing this one of two things happens.
1. Unable to fork, happens when I use exec(), system(), passthru()
2. php.exe crashes, happens when I use the backtick operator or shell_execute()

I am running IIS 5.1 with Windows XP. I have tried simple scripts as
exec("ls -al") and still am able to do nothing. I have tired
exec("cmd /c ls -al") and that doesn't work either. Can anyone help?

Hve you tried both the ISAPI and the CGI version ? Also, have you tried -
php.exe myphpfile.php >>results.txt from the command line ? Also, try using the various
optimized vs dist PHP.INI files and see if you have any luck.

Go to www.sysinternals.com and download "Filemon". It's sort of a sniffer for Windows. You'll get to see if the commands are even being called from PHP.

I was running 4.10-4.11 and Alpha 4.2 with no luck. Now I'm going to try 4.06 as several old posts had mentioned these commands were working. I'm starting to get the feeling that running external commands from within PHP on a Windows platform is as much chanting and prayer as it is proper config...
