Online Customer Support System

We're looking to add one of those instant messaging live help systems to our website. We'd like to build the project in house. Does anybody know where to find information on building this type of application? We're looking for something real simple that allows a customer the ability to send instant messages to a customer support rep, nothing fancy.

Look at using JAVA. It would be something like a chatroom but a little tweaked. I personally have never done it quite yet. No customer has asked me to yet. Like I said look at using a JAVA applet to complete that request. Or you could set up an AIM account just for that. Or Yahoo or MSN.

Thanks for the tip, our customers haven't asked either but I think it would increase sales if we had it. I've seen many outsourced sultions such as jm messenger and jabber web client but the cheapest I found started at $50 a month. I was looking to implement this for free.
