It means you have something other than a variable at a spot where PHP's expecting to see a variable.

On which line is this happening? Post that and perhaps the one or two lines previous and we should be able to spot the exact problem.

$1, etc. make no sense as variable names. As the PHP documentation states: "Variable names follow the same rules as other labels in PHP. A valid variable name starts with a letter or underscore, followed by any number of letters, numbers, or underscores."

If you don't want to change the names of your form fields, use $HTTP_POST_VARS['1'], etc. Otherwise it's pretty much inaccessible.
