Expanding menu

I want to create an expanding menu system for web links stired in a database. The menu system will have to be dynamicly generated based on the catagories in the database and then the links in each catagory.

Can anyone point me in the right direction with this?

you want a cross between javascript and php/mysql... nice.

Well find some javascript.

then make a table with rows called links.
with in it put name, link.

use a loop with some arrays then merge it in somehow and BAM! you have it...

I know how to run a loop to retrieve info from the table, and I have some javascript that will work nicely for the menu itself, but the thing that I am really struggling with is how I set up my loop to run such that as it cyles through and comes to a new catagory, it starts a new menu item. Do I set up two variables and compare them to see if the current catagory is different from the one just retireved from the database? Is there a set way of doing this?

You could keep an "old" copy of the category name, like this:

$old_category = "" ;
while (looping for new rows)
{
// this, of course, assumes you're using
// $new_row as your array name from fetching
// database information

if ($new_row[catagory] != $old_category)
{
// new category detected
// draw whatever differently in the JavaScript here
$old_category = $new_row[category] ;
}
// draw menu element
}

That how I'd do it ...
