getting list items from a form

on my form i have the user add items to a list box, and i wanted to know if i can get those items from the listbox with my php script when they submit the form, the only way i was able to get items from the list with my script was if they were selected, and i wanted to know if this was the only way you can get items from the list or if you can get unselected items aswell, if anyone knows please tell me. Thanks.

How is the list constructed in your form? Is it using radio boxes, check boxes or something else?

well, all i really have on the form is 2 list boxes, list #1 has a list of types of music that the user enjoys, and when you dubble click a selection on list #1 it adds that selection to list #2, and i am trying to get my script to get all the items in list #2, and then from there it adds a acount on my database with the users intrests and stuff like that..
