When it comes to web programming, PHP beats JAVA easily. PHP is fast, easy and has all the needed functions. JSP, on the other hand, may be more scalable, may be somewhat more difficult to understand, and is, in my opinion, more obsurely documented. Granted, when you get used to it, the documentation is no longer a problem. On the first projects, do not expect to save time by translating from PHP to JSP, on the contrary, expect to loose time. However, once your main routines/objects are translated (database connectivity, string manipulations, ...) it is comes really fast. It took me three projects to have the basics well round up, and I am stil working on it. I do not think that I will ever come close to a perfect work method, however I think that I have pretty much covered the basics and some more.
