Text file has lost it's formatting

Hi, i'm using MySQL to store some very short stories. Stories are submitted via a form and are all nicely formatted. HOWEVER, when I upload them and spit them back out on a webpage. They lose all their spaces, returns etc.

Also, is it possible to retain some of the italics and bold while uploading?

I'm rather clueless on how to do this.
Can someone help me out?

Hey, I have got the same problem with input from a multiline text box!

Consider using nl2br, that should convert the conventional line breaks to HTML line breaks.
