regular expressions

I posted the topic before, but now i am more clear what i need. let's say i have <a href="http://mysite.com/variabe1=blablabla/variable2=blabla">link</a>

now i need to tell the script to change everthing starting from "variable1" till ">" to hello, so that i can have <a href="http://mysite.com/hello">link</a>

how i do accoplish this? eregi_replace, preg_replace? please if possible give me the code since i am really newbie to php. thank you!
