Exec problem

1) This does not work on my system. No data returned, no file created. It works if I type in in shell.

exec("echo Test > test.out", $output);
foreach ($output as $value) print "$value <br>\n" ;

When I try shell exec I get:
"Can not execute using backquotes in safe mode."

I can not change mode, becouse I'm hosted in virtual environment. Please help

2) How to split one logical code of line over two physical editor lines in PHP ?

Hello,

I know why it did not work. I had to change settings of safemode to off in php.ini/ I thoght it is required for shell_exec to work, but not for exec. I was wrong.

I have another problem

$pepath="/home/ehlvest/www/cgi-bin/pgn-extract";

$command="$pepath $this->filename -otmp_{$this->filename} -Whalg[PNBRQK]";

exec ($command, $output);

foreach ($output as $value) {echo "$value <br>" ;}

It does not print anything. However executing from LINUX shell works fine. There is output:
