How to offer alternative search results

I have a name search facilty on my site, it works fine. As does the error message when no names are found. Instead of "No matches were found" how can I display nearest matches eg, There are no matches for "Dave", did you mean David?

You could try and use soundex(). Soundex is a funtcion that will return a soundex key for a word, similar sounding words will have an indentical key. Metaphone() and similar_text() might also be if interest.
Don't know how/if they would fit in with whatever you're doing though, and the it might be expensive in processor time to do this.

Is there no simpler way with a MySQL theory, using similar to "WHERE Name LIKE '$Name%'.."
