Converting day of year to mm/dd/yyyy

I have searched the archives, but have not been able to find this answer.

I want to do the following with PHP.

Take a formatted date such as

03/01/2002

And convert it to the day of the year

Then add a certain amount of time in days

59 + 45 = 104

And then convert 104 to the corresponding date in this format again...

4/14/2002

What is the PHP function(s) that will do this sort of thing?

$insert_date = "03/01/2002";
$number_of_days = 45;

$timestamp1 = strtotime ($insert_date);
$timestamp2 = $number_of_days * 86400 + $timestamp1;

$date1 = date ("m/d/Y", $timestamp1);
$date2 = date ("m/d/Y", $timestamp2);

echo "$date1<br>$date2";
?>

You can convert the current date to a Julian Day count, add the number of days, and convert that back to the Gregorian date.
