ip addreses

im not sure if this is the right place to ask, but if anyone can help it would be great. my friends had a problem of someone posted on her journal and not leaving a name, we think we know who it is but were not sure. The site logs all of the ip addresses, and we have plenty to compare it to, i need to know if theres some way to compare ip addreses to tell if its coming from the same computer. if anyone can help, please do so.

If the computer in question is coming in with the same ip address it would be easy. Unfortunatly some isp's give a user a newr ip each time they login. So tracking though the ip address is not very accurate.

Why not alter the journal entry page to require a name. A small bit of javascript would do it.

best bet re . ip is to get onto isp, depending on the country they might not be able to give u the name of subscriber, re data protection (eg uk data protection act 1998) but a complaint to appropriate authorites will lead to prosecution of offender if requested.

after the successful prosecution, the identity will be revealed 😉 if ya can be bothered!!!!!!

While it's true that most ISPs these days are doing dynamic IP assignment, if it's a high speed connection such as a cable modem, the host name usually remains fairly intact, so a reverse lookup of the IP address might yield a fairly positive ID of the hostname. Not quite enough to reveal the perpetrator, but if you know the person has comcast.net like you do, and you know they're in michigan, and their hostname is similar enough to yours, well.. you know.

thanks for the help. the journal page does have an option so that only users can post, but my friend didnt have that on when the person posted everything. i was hopeing there was some way to tell if the adresses all came from the same person, i cant think of any other way to see who it was

nah, its nothing too big to bring to court or whatever. just some dumb person saying alot of personal things about me and my friends, that only someone thats close to us would know. so there is absolutly no way to tell if addresses came from the same person?
