MySQL dumps in PHP

To Anyone who can help,

I am currently trying to do backups of my MySQL databases, table definitions and table data by using MySQL's mysqldump shell function.

Is there anyway to use this function within a PHP script. Because I want to automate the process without having to rely on using the phpAdmin feature.

You could just execute a system command using the backtick operator. On some of my systems I have an old perl script that just reads in the root password for mysql from /root/.my.cnf (script runs as root), rotates some logs and runs:

mysqldump $DBNAME --opt -u root --password=$password | gzip > $newfile;

It works decently on small databases, and that exact syntax would work for a php script as well.

Thanks Omega,

I stumbled upon the backtick operator a couple of days ago but the problem that I was having was that my mysqldump is not in the same directory as my web directory.

So what I did was us the backtick operator to ls -al through to the system directory of my host and find where they kept the mysql folder.

I did, and used the above formula and it worked fine.
