PHP chat

Hello!
Many chatrooms output new messages from the database during reload.
I've seen a few chatrooms where messages frame does not reload every time, it is appended instead. New messages are appended to the output as soon as user sends them to DB.
What is the mechanism of this? How can I make the same thing work for me?

I get the impression that they are using a frame based chat with advanced clientscripts. The user posts to a "hidden" frame and this frame updates often and appended it´s content to the chat frame. If this is the case you will need:

• database
• server script language (ASP, PHP)
• client script language (JavaScript, VBScript)
