PDF Creation through php

I'm struggling to find fully working php source code to create and modify pdf documents.

I have tried multiple scripts that I found, but none work on my systems (Redhat 7.0, Apache 1.3.20, php 4.0.6, pdflib 4.0.1)

I simply want the script to open a pdf file and modify one or two text lines, preferably the info will be drawn from a mysql database.
