functions: .htaccess .htpasswd

can someone explain me how to make this files work ?
i made one but it didn't work:
.htacces:
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Administration"
AuthUserFile /.htpasswd
require valid-user

.htpasswd:
testuser:testpassword

but it doesnt work ?!!...
can someone tell me the answer, ehy it does not work ?
(the files are in the same directory)

(if someone speaks german please write the answer in german)

You need to encypt the password try making the file with
htpasswd -c /.htpasswd username<return>

then enter the password as it prompts for it. To create the file from php use the md5 function.

you need to set the proper value for AllowOverride. see this page:

I feel there may have been some misunderstanding you dont enter htpasswd in the htpasswd file. It creates the file.

Fromt the command line type the code you will end up with .htpasswd looking something like

username:a4D4c146CF6SD2f4FG
