POSTing variables through image

I'm currently creating a PHP menu tree. I have multiple dynamically created links with images associated with them...

• Link3
  O Checkbox1
  O Checkbox2

My problem is that I can check the boxes, but when I check the + sign next to another link and display the sub boxes, the checkbox values below it are lost. I tried using HTTP_GET(POST)_VARS, but since it is not a submit, it doesn't work.

I'm pulling my hair out...
