Date formating from Mysql to php

i can't believe i can't figure this out...

YES: I can format a date by specifying the formatting the sql call... BUT IF i want to select * and try to get php to format the date I can't find a clue anywhere EVEN on the php manual.

how do I take a date filed from MYSQL (via a select *) and format it?
