Does anyone know how to do passing a username and password
to the http server in order for it to authenticate a given protected
directory???

depends on your type of authentication...

As my esteemed colleague tabish mentioned, you can use .htaccess... but personally I prefer database driven authentication.

Once you decide on a method, come back with more questions...

What do you mean?
Do you want put password-protection on a directory,
or do you want to use PHP to login to a protected directory somewhere else?
