is the file a .jpg or a .doc?

Help!

I've made a script that makes me able to upload pictures to a directory on the server.

I want to generate a filename consisting of date and time.

I want to identify what filetype/fileformat
my uploaded file is..

is it a .jpg or is it a .doc?
How can i do this?

Anybody out there with a solution?

Parse the file name?

if (strpos(substr($filename,strlen($filename) - 4,strlen($filename)),'.jpg'))
{ echo "It's a .JPG"; }

if (strpos(substr($filename,strlen($filename) - 4,strlen($filename)),'.doc'))
{ echo "It's a .DOC"; }

$file_type = substr($filename, -3, 3);
echo "It's a $file_type";

The variable <b>$</b>whatever<b>_type</b> will have the mime type of the file being uploaded (ie: "image/gif").
