Strip out complex substrings

what is the best PHP way to strip it down to:

This is part of a Word 2000 doc saved as HTML. I know about the Word 2000 Save as Compact filter so don't mention it, it leaves crap as well. This will have to be done brute force. Then the remaining text is saved to mysql record.

A way would be to use regular expressions...you might want to look in to that if you want to do complex stuff.

But a simple way for the example you gave is use the strip_tags() function, put as a allowable tag.
