Limit # of searches possible at once

I have a seach script and I want to limit the amount to people or users that can search at once, to save server space. What kind of query would I use to do this. I can figure out the db tables but on how to update the db once you search and finish searching.

Maybe you could have a text file that counts how many users are currently searching, then remove 1 when they exit the search page. Or make a seperate column for the number of users searching.
