dynamically generated image maps

Maybe someone can kindly advise me on the following.

I am dynamically generating a png image using a php script invoked by an <img> tag.
This is working out well for my needs as the content is volatile and I want to avoid storing the png file on the server.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an analogous way of dealing with a dynamically generated image map. I could pre-generate the image and the corresponding image map as I generate the html page, but then I'm back to square one as I'd have to temporarily store a png file, and find a way purge it later on.

Any insights are greatly appreciated.

Iv'e done this before successfully ... and you really only have one option as far as I can see.

You have to call the script twice. Call it once to generate the HTML page and to create the image map, then, in the img tag for your image, place a call to the script again, with the same params, but also an additonal flag to tell it to output the image this time.

Unfortunately, you know have to call the script twice, but its better than the alternative of storing a file on the server which is definetly not the best way to do it.
