eregi_replace or str_replce

I'm stuck. I need to replace any character that is not a-z or 0-9 with a ''. I have a rough idea on how to do this but I'm getting in a coding nightmare.

Help me pleasze.

I know str_replace is faster but this should work eregi is not case sensitive

$data = eregi_replace("[^{A-Z0-9]","",$data);}
