data mining in PHP

From what I've gathered you can use the perl LWP:Simple module to mine data, is there a way that you can do this with PHP?

Say you want to extract information from a page on the web and dump that in a MySQL db, is this possible?

I guess you can do that with regexp's...or parsing the file line by line yourself...I'm not sure what the LWP:Simple module does 🙁
