Error Catch Bad DB Connection

Does anyone have an elegant way to test to see if a database connection is in place, and then kicking up an error page if it can\'t make the connection?

I was thinking something along the logic of...

Try (mysql_connect(blah, blah, blah))
Catch(go to an error page)

Error Page:

\"Sorry DB is down for maintenance try back in a few minutes\"

Try something like this:

mysql_connect(blah,blah,blah) or die("Sorry, DB is down for maintainenece. Try back soon");

You could also write your own function instead of using die(), to, for example, send an e-mail to you if the database is down, or log the event/display a nice error page.

Thanks. I use the "or die" when doing queries. Didn't think about that for the connection! Doh!
