stroptags function

Can anybody tell me exactly what the striptags function is for I've read the manual but don't really understand, I'm quite new to php.

Its a short cut for pulling out HTML tags from a text string. (user input in a forum for instance) You can leave some of the tags in if you wish, like bold or italics or whatever. Its pretty handy if you want to handle the look and feel of things yourself without users cluttering it all up. =)
