<a href> coding problem

could someone help me with my coding prob:
I am using:

print ("<a href=tests\'newlayoutbig.php?listnumber=$D'>details</a>");

When I put my mouse of the link "details" i see this:

http://.........../tests/tests/'newlayoutbig.php?listnumber=111111'

I don't need the extra tests directory and I don't need the single quote before newlayoutbig and after 111111.

Can anyone help?

print ("<a href=\"/tests/newlayoutbig.php?listnumber=$D\">details</a>");

Why is the first backslash outside the quote and the second backslash is inside the quote? And what do they do?

I changed it to:

print ("<a href='newlayoutbig.php?listnumber=$D'>details</a>");

and it worked. I guess since newlayoutbig.php was the tests dir. thanks.

the \'s I used escape the quotes character so that it is printed instead of interpreted by php. I.e. you can then do print "I love \"this\" game."; and have it print this: I love "this" game. you know?
