||- php vs Java, C++

So, I've converted over from ASP and feel great. I can typically do things in PHP in half the lines it woudl take in ASP.

Now, as I get more into the concept of modularizing my code and developing objects, and coming up with great ideas, I start realizing there's more to life than a browser window.

If I had as a goal to create a stand-alone program, such as Opera has done, what would be the best language, bearing in mind most of my programming still deals with connections to the internet and getting data off of it?

And, what kind of authoring tool do I need and how much $, or is there something that is free that I could start out on. Yes, I do want to be able to operate in Win32 because that's where most of the world is.

Appreciate any leads and comparisons betweeen C++ and java, and am I missing anything?

If u r working in PHP then the best option for u to go for is GTK for php u will get all the information about it on http://www.php.net hope u get going with it.

I don't think PHP was designed to write browsers, and such. Now, between Java and C++. Java is easier to learn, and in my opinion, much better structured than Visual C++. I don't really like the way we have to write programs in VC++. And also, Java is free. But sometimes, because of market demands, you have to go with VC++. It is faster than Java, and requires less resources I believe. Also, to run Java, your users will need the JRE installed, so that's another advantage for VC++ which can run natively. But another advantage of Java is that it's cross-platform, so when you develop for Windows you also develop for Linux, Solaris, etc.
