getting the URL into a string

Can someone please tell me what code I should be using to get the url of the current page into a string.

What I want is to get just one part of it..

example:

http://www.somedomain.com/-this_part_is_what_i_want-

How do I do this?

ok that is great, thnx, but how do it get it to dript the file name, i just want the folder, sorry, should have said.

see what i have is several folder with peoples names,

so if you went to www.somedomain.com/charlie/index.php is echo's 'this folder belongs to charlie'

understand that?

Use dirname($_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME']). It'll probably have a slash at the beginning which you can take out using ltrim()

it puts /index.php on the end too though, how do i remove this and how do i make sure it take the length of thename into account like paul, peter, patrick?

This works:

$file = "/charlie/index.php";
print ltrim(dirname($file), '/');
?>

Just change $file to $_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME']
